Finished Size: 84"x84"
Big pieces. Two colors + background. And only a few half square triangles!
Make 472 (or 500 to give yourself some choices) half square triangles. These need to finish at 2” X 2”, so minimum cut square size is 3” X 3”. Don't groan.
Just do a few at a time.
This is a great time to find all the triangles that you trimmed from other projects and saved in that plastic bag and then forgot about. Or, head to your
stash. Or, find all your scraps of various sizes. As long as the piece is at least 3” X 3”, you can get 2 half square triangles out of it. Scrap squares can also
be bigger, and then you can square the block to 2 1⁄2” X 2 1⁄2”.
Color choices: You can choose to pair a colorful square with a solidish black square for all of your squares. Or just pair 2 different colors together.
I see this quilt done up in brights. That’s the color scheme. But you can also find a nice border fabric and choose all you fabrics to match the border. So:
Florals & pastels; red, white & blue; earth tomes; Halloween colors; Christmas reds, greens, browns & golds. If you don’t use 1 color (like a black) for each
half square triangle pair, you may want to at least put a dark + a medium and medium + light for a lot of the blocks. The contrast in tone will be nice. But
not all of the blocks need that contrast, so just mix it up, like any good scrap quilt! We’ll tie it all together later. Trust me.
FABRIC:
Background: You can use a white on white, or a small Christmas print on white background print. Must read predominantly white.
Background = 1 ½ yards
Red: Chose 2 different reds, one dark, one medium. Tone on tone reds are best. If you chose a Christmas patterned red, make sure it reads predominantly red. You do need some contrast between the 2 reds. Also, make sure the reds match the border fabric. If you substitute a novelty red for the dark red (see below) keep the fabric predominantly red and not predominately light.
Option 1: Dark = 1 ½ yards, Medium 2 yards
Option 2: Fun novelty Christmas print = 1 yard, Medium = 2 yards, Dark = ½ yard
Green: Chose 2 different greens, one dark, one medium. Tone on tome greens are best. If you chose a Christmas patterned green, make sure it reads predominantly green. You DO NOT need contrast between the 2 greens. NO FABRICS WITH A LOT OF PATTERN. Also, make sure the greens match the border fabric.
Dark = 1 3/4 Medium = 1/2
Inner Border You will need 3/4 yard. You can choose a red or a green, depending on your border.
Outer border You will need 2 ½ for straight of grain borders. Choose a fun Christmas print.
If you choose a different color palette, based on your Christmasy border, only choose 2 colors to work with–a medium and dark in both colors. Plus a light for the background. If you wanted to do all blues, you could choose a white for the background, light blue, medium blue, dark blue and maybe a charcoal for the darkest of the colors. See me for those fabric requirements.
You do not need to use Christmas colors for this quilt. You can choose any 2 colors and use a medium and dark for each color.
This pattern will also look best if you do not use scraps. Use the same red for all of the dark, etc. Don’t mix and match.
Cut as directed below. Keep the PARTS in separate bags, labeled accordingly.

Make pinwheels from your half square triangles. See picture on right. You will need 125 (that gives you a few extra).
Cut strips, 1 dark, 1 medium or lighter at 2 1/2" X 8 1/2". Sew two pinwheels together and add the strips to the sides.
You will need: 59 dark 2 1/2" X 8 1/2" strips and 59 medium/light 2 1/2" X 8 1/2" strips
That's about 1 yard of each color. Make sure to keep the dark to the left and the medium/light to the right.
This quilt is an on point quilt. You will need 1 yard for the setting and corner triangles.
Inner border you’ll need 2/3 yard. Inner borders are cut at 2 1/2".
Outer border you will need 2 1⁄2 yards. Outer borders are cut at 5 1⁄2".
Setting triangles are cut at 13" X 13" (bigger than you need). Cut 5. Cut on diagonal twice.
Corner triangles are cut at 6 3/4" X 6 3/4". Cut 2. Cut on diagonal once.
Sew together on diagonal rows.
Follow the picture of the quilt for placement of blocks.
This is a diagonal setting. Sew all diagonal rows, sew rows together and then add your 4 corner triangles. If you need help, come in and ask.
