There are also some easy ways to make blocks bigger and cut them down to the correct size. So we’ll explore that as well. This quilt can easily be done with scraps, but if you’re interested, I have a lot of left over Downtown Abbey fabrics. For a $20 fee you can choose fabrics from the collection for your quilt.  

This is a hands on class. I will provide the practice materials, you will bring your machine. You will need a hopping/darning foot for class. You will also need to be able to drop or cover your feed dogs. If you have a walking foot, you can bring it as well, but it is not necessary for class. In class you will practice various patterns and techniques for machine quilting. 

We will be working with the pattern: Vanilla Sock with Gusset and Choice of Reinforced Heel. It calls for fingering weight yarn and US 1/5 needles. Check out the pattern for more information. The pattern has a couple of different heel options (and other heel choices will also be discussed) and Toni will be guiding us through this toe up version. If you want to do 2 at a time, she will help with that as well. I’ll just be doing one at a time. If you want a top down version in a worsted weight, there is the Simple Camping Sock (calls for Aran, I’ve used worsted). 

Make a hat and be ready for Halloween! Make 2! These are reversible hats made with fusible fleece and soft & stable foam to give them body. In Class we will trave the pattern (or you can do that at home), cut out the pieces, quickly quilt them, and sdew back together. It is a quick project. If you haven’t done machine quilting before, you can just run some simple lines across the fabric to hold the layers together. Or you can take the Machine Quilting class (on Labor Day) and maybe try something more fancy. Your choice.

You’ve cut your strips, now it’s time to sew. If you haven’t cut your strips.....you still have time. Check out the web page for homework. The key to getting a good log cabin block is to measure, measure, measure. Trim. And sew straight! We will work on all those skills in class. We will also talk about designs for your cabin blocks, and alternate ways to make log cabin blocks. The paper bag part? You put all your darks into one bag, all your lights into another bag, and whatever you pull out, you use. I may even add some strips to your bags. 

These leaves call for using a specialty ruler (a kite ruler, or what we use for the 54-40 or fight block) and a neat way to put in stems. Liz has it all figured out. Fabric requirements will be on the Homework page soon. Just start looking for a variety of fall colors and a fun background. Pattern shows a gray, but, you know Liz, she’s working with different colors for her backgrounds. You can use gray, black, blue, purple – anything that makes the leaves pop.

This is a stack and whack form of quilting. You will be making turkeys, and if you want to make the quilt bigger, you can add some pumpkins to the mix. Look on the homework page for fabric requirements, but mainly you will be working with fat quarters of turkey colors–which can range from gold, yellow, brown, blue, red, purple, green. Might as well have colorful turkeys! 

For several years we’ve been doing 6 quilts from one book. You can do all of the quilts, or just one! This year we will do 4 quilts, because the quilts have more pieces and will take a little longer to construct. BUT we wil put on the schedule 6 quilts from the book, Stashtactic II by Doug Leko. The deal will be: Choose any 4 quilts, from the 6 we will offer, and pay $135—get one free. Or buy one at a time for $45.  So the schedule will show 4 quilts, one every 3rd month. And then, we will drop an extra 2 quilts into the schedule at random. Just because. This is the last quilt, and it is called Interwoven.

It’s cold enough to start a sweater, I hope. This summer was too hot to have a wool sweater on your lap. But it’s time! You can do top down, bottom up, stranded or plain. We can help you choose a pattern and suggest yarn choices. My first sweater was the Felix Pullover. My first stranded sweater was Afmaeli Anniversary Sweater. But any sweater pattern will work and any yarn weight will work. My suggestion: If you want to get your sweater done more quickly, choose a worsted weight sweater. Choose your needles to get gauge. I know, I know. But gauge is important, so start your swatches in October, so you’re ready for class.
