We’re offering Potluck again, because….well, we like it so much. This is a quilt made from left over parts from other quilts, combined with other free form blocks that we will teach you how to make. You get to choose the size and shape of your quilt and we’ll offer suggestions on how to bring it all together. The inspiration is from the various Liberated Quilting books by Gwen Marston and Freddie Moran (found only as used books now). In the first class I will show how to make free form house blocks. I will also offer other blocks that you may choose to make to include in your quilt. This quilt can be completely scrappy/ad hoc, or you can center your blocks around a theme and/or color.
Saturday December 27, 10:30-3, FREE
This is a support class, plus teaching you your knits & purls. We are working on a scarf, and will move on to a hat when anyone is ready. You will learn to cast on and to knit & purl, to make the scarf. You will be changing colors when making the scarf, so you will learn different ways to join a new color and then how to weave in the ends. You will learn how to recognize your knits vs your purls, and, probably, how to unknit when you make a mistake. When you are comfortable with the basic knitting & purling, we will proceed to making a hat, knitting in the round. The hat will teach you how to decrease and increase, how to join in the round without twisting, and then more practice knitting and purling. Finally, we will do a mitten, which will teach you how to work with 5 double pointed needles. We’ll also talk about and maybe teach the Magic Loop method. Mittens also teach how to put live stitches on a “holder,” and then how to pick up and knit extra stitches in order to put the thumb on the mitten. At any point, if you want to soar off into sweater land, we will help you do that. And colorwork—making the color patterns in hats, mitts and sweaters. We’ll also talk about felting, think Christmas stockings.

For several years we’ve been doing 6 quilts from one book. This year we will do 4 quilts, because the quilts have more pieces and will take a little longer to construct. BUT we will put on the schedule 6 quilts from the book, Stashtastic II by Doug Leko. The deal will be: Choose any 4 quilts, from the 6 we will offer, and *pay $135—get one free. So the schedule will show 4 quilts, one every 3rd month. And then, we will drop an extra 2 quilts into the schedule at random. Just because. The first quilt is Star Sparkle.

This quilt uses the Sew Kind of Wonderful rulers to create fun ways to make curvy quilts. The pattern is called Sunny/Sunny Rays and we’re teaching it in two parts: The first part will be organizing colors and cutting the fan blades, and basic construction. The second class will continue the basic constructions, and then we’ll introduce you to the ruler that helps you trim everything accurately. It’s another Ruler Class!
Saturday February 21, 1-4, $55, Jean Korber
Class #1: We are making a jacket pattern called Rosy’s Patterns, specifically the Classic Quilted Pattern. You can find her on line at her Etsy shop. Jean will post more detailed info in the Homework section on the website. This is a downloadable pattern only. I also can’t grab a screen shot—I’ll keep trying. Class one will be tracing the pattern onto tissue paper, and fitting the jacket to your own measurements. Jean will also talk about creating the fabric for this jacket—which can include using 1 or 2 quilts (80 X 80) that you have already made, but don’t know what to do with. OR you can make a quilt (or 2, one for outside and one for inside) and have the 2 quilts quilted together. Check the Homework page for more detailed info regarding the class, the fabric requirements, and the pattern. ALSO: If you have not taken Jean’s Machine Binding class (see next entry) you must! This jacket has a lot of machine binding parts and Jean will teach you the best ways to put the machine binding on.
The pattern is Quilted Jacket Beginner by RosysPatterns. Jean will be teaching off this pattern and only this pattern!
Check out the Homework Page for the pattern link and additional instructions prior to attending this class!!
Saturday February 28, 10:30-1, $45, Jean Korber

In class you will cut your binding, stitch it to your project, miter your corners and then stitch it down by machine on the other side, using decorative stitches. This class is a must if you are taking the Jacket class!

You will draft your own blocks, create your own patterns, and design a quilt around your blocks. I will also show you how the Electric Quilt program works and let you play around on the computer. If you have a pattern idea that you want to create, bring your ideas and fabric and I’ll help you through the creation (mainly the math) of putting a quilt together from scratch.

Felting a wool project, like a stocking, a bag, a hat, slippers or mittens is a fun way to use up scraps. First, we have to choose a project—I’ll work on that. I think what we will try first is a bag or basket, because it is easy to do, and will introduce you to a couple of new things in knitting. We’ll explain about the felting process and what you need to do when you’re finished. ALSO, in any of the knitting classes you can work on whatever you want. You can also come and learn the basics of knitting and purling. Or you can just get help for any project you are working on. No guarantees, but we should be able to help.

It’s now time to sew and do a little binding. You should have your fabric all quilted and ready to be cut. Class time will be spent in cutting and, again, fitting, your jacket. You will have time to sew and you may have time for some binding. Things like pockets will be discussed. We have one more class time, as a just in case we need it, next month to help you put the finishing touches on your jacket.

We usually put a classic quilt on the schedule and this time it’s the Bear Paw. I will have 2 different patterns for you, one the traditional and the other is the oversized Wyoming Bear Paw. Patterns will be given in class and on the webpage, under Homework, I’ll have fabric requirements. You can do the quilt in just 2 colors, or you can make it scrappy. I will offer various setting choices AND if you took the design class, you will be able to design your own fun borders (I’ll have examples to show and, of course, I’ll help with the math).

This quilt uses 2 quilt blocks, Card Trick plus an alternate pieced block. Patterns will be given out in class. Fabric requirements will be in the Homework section on the Web page. The first class I’ll teach the two blocks. Then you will have a month to get your blocks made and put togethers. This is important! In the second class you will make the pieced border and learn how to fit the quilt to the border. If you don’t get the top done (and I understand it is a short turn around) you can still learn how to piece and fit the border to your quilt, once you get it done.

We’ve chosen an easy tote bag that can be completed using a fancy panel—Harry Potter perhaps? Or a western themed, Christmas themed, floral themed panel. Look to the Homework page for the pattern info – we’re still choosing the pattern. The tote bag is great for all those things you need to haul everywhere, including taking fabric home from the shop, to groceries, to knitting….You need a tote bag. An easy one!

This quilt is made up of just squares (if you want to be fancy) or just a piece of fabric (more boring). A quillow is a quilt that is enveloped (turned inside out, so no binding) and it can be folded into “pillow” sized quilt and stuffed into a “pillow” case fixed to the quilt. Voila! A pillow that can be transformed into a quilt, as needed. Great to take on trips, to school functions, for kids and movie night. Simple, easy, and some minimal machine quilting on your home machine. You should be able to get the entire quilt finished in class, AND you should be able to get started on the (minimal) machine quilting. Great for gifts.
